Autism Spectrum Disorder Young People

Enhanced Care provide the highest level of expertise. In other words, to support and improve life chances for young people and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Further, our homes in Durham and the North East are managed by our associate company Resilience North East Ltd.

You cannot always tell that someone has autism just by looking at them. It’s a hidden disability. Autism lasts for all of a person’s life. However, young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder can benefit greatly from specialist support, to learn and develop life skills.

What Causes Autism?

No one knows why people have Autism. Furthermore, Autism is not caused by bad parenting or bad relations. More than one person in a family can have Autism. It can be genetic and for this reason can pass from parents to their children.

In addition, Autism Spectrum Disorder affects the way a person relates, behaves and interacts with other people and the world.

  • People with Autism find it difficult to communicate and therefore say what they need and  feel.
  • Some find it difficult to have relationships, meet people and make new friends.
  • Others find it difficult to understand what other people think, and feel.
  • Some find lack of structure and changes to routines difficult.

Not everyone with Autism will find these things hard. Autism is a spectrum disorder. Similarly, people with Autism share common problems but their condition will affect them in different ways.

Some people with Autism Spectrum Disorder are able to live independent lives. Others may have a learning disability which affects their development e.g. dyslexia.  They may be affected by emotional and behavioural challenges. They often have sensory difficulties such as noise or light sensitivity. Consequently, many young people with Autism need specialist support. Enabling them to to reach their full potential.

Our Autism Spectrum Disorder specialists and facilities are in Teesside in the North East of England.

We understand how important a positive and homely atmosphere is for young people. As a result at our Durham Autism care home each young person will have a comfortable, adapted bedroom with an en-suite. Which they can personalise and make their own.

These spaces are fully accessible and adapted. Including a kitchen, spacious lounge, multipurpose activity room, sensory room, dining room and laundry area. There’s a large enclosed, safe garden with a mixture of patio and grassed areas. In other words, supporting the development of leisure, relaxation and social activities.

Above all, we believe that by receiving timely support young people have the ability to learn and achieve. Many of our young people have a history of placement breakdowns and difficulties at school. Some need us to provide additional support at school or college to get back into education or other education provision.

In addition, we work with each young person and their family. This is to establish a learning plan that includes personal skills, life skills, problem solving skills and social skills.

Furthermore, we always look forward to celebrating our young people’s achievements with them.

Therapeutic Services

Our Autism Spectrum Disorder services in Durham use a number of person-centred approaches.

Accordingly, these include structured timetables; communication strategies; positive behaviour plans; adapted learning and living spaces, to help reduce anxieties and promote independence. Creating stimulating environments with proactive strategies to help the young people develop skills. Enabling them to change and manage their own behaviour with an active lifestyle that the young person enjoys. This aids reduced stress and helps decrease some of the stereotypical and repetitive behaviours associated with Autism.

After that we therefore work effectively with our young people and their families to provide positive meaningful outreach work to young people.
